Siaya Governor James Orengo has strongly affirmed that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna continues to hold the position of Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Orengo insisted that Sifuna remains the legitimate and recognised head of party operations.
"As I stand here, the Secretary General of ODM is Senator Edwin Sifuna. Shall I repeat for purposes of record and for all those who can hear us from all corners of this great country, the SG of Raila's party, ODM, is one Edwin Sifuna," Orengo declared.
Orengo defended Sifuna’s loyalty and track record, describing him as a seasoned party official who continues to speak on behalf of ODM. He highlighted that Sifuna has been an integral part of the party for nearly a decade, playing key roles during critical moments in its history.
"Senator Sifuna has served the party for nearly 10 years, and he has been with Raila Odinga at very critical and crucial moments, including running the affairs of the party between two elections, 2017 and 2022," Orengo said.
The governor noted that Sifuna’s stewardship as Secretary General coincided with some of the most sensitive periods in the party, including the time between the 2017 and 2022 general elections, during which he managed party affairs effectively. Orengo underscored that throughout this period, Raila Odinga never publicly criticised or rebuked Sifuna for his performance, demonstrating the trust and confidence the party leader has in him.
"During the entire life of Raila Odinga and during the period in which Edwin Sifuna was the SG, there is no single moment that Raila Odinga rebuked or criticised in public in the discharge of his functions as SG," Orengo said.
Orengo also took aim at what he called attempts by individuals without national legitimacy to remove Sifuna from his post. He dismissed these moves as baseless, reaffirming that Sifuna continues to represent and speak for ODM.
"I shudder to think that mere minions, people who have got no legitimacy in the entire country, can dare talk about Edwin Sifuna. Sifuna speaks for the party, and even today, Sifuna is speaking for the party," he added.
